The mortgage customer data which became accessible included account numbers and social security numbers. In some cases telephone numbers could also be accessed. The bank has not formally revealed the number of mortgage loan customers who have been affected by the data breach. One of the steps which HSBC Finance Corp. has taken is the notification of the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office about the mortgage customer data leak. The bank has done this in line with the legal requirements for mandatory disclosure in the State of New Hampshire. According to The Register, there are estimates that nearly 700 people may have been affected by the breach in this state alone.

In a formal statement, HSBC Finance Corp. reassures their customers that the bank responded to the problem immediately and the personal and financial information of the previously affected mortgage customers is no longer accessible on the internet. The bank also offers one year of free credit monitoring to everyone who has been affected by the data leak.
